Ashley & Chase’s DIY Wedding at Hotel Marshfield

March 29, 2019

On the day Chase proposed, Ashley saw it coming. “I got to Chase’s house before he was home one Friday night and sitting on his kitchen table was a bill from a jewelry store.” Ashley peeked and saw it was for an engagement ring, but Chase made it all the way to Sunday afternoon before he started acting funny. Following what Ashely suspects were two failed attempts to pop the question, Chase finally got the timing right after a Sunday drive with Ashley and her dog, Richard.

“Chase jumped out of the vehicle first, then I opened my door to let Richard out,” she recalls. “Chase ran over to my side of the car as I was getting out and said, ‘Wait! I forgot something in the center console.’” When Ashley opened the console, she found the ring, then looked back to find Chase on one knee. “He went straight to, ‘Will you marry me?’ — I of course looked at the ring first, then said yes,” Ashley laughs.

The happy couple planned a fall wedding with autumn colors of burgundy and gold. The ceremony was held in a church with a reception at the  Hotel Marshfield. “We wanted a bit of an elegant theme, but nothing to fancy, with some DIY projects thrown in.” The night before the wedding, Sarah’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner at their farm. “My dad actually re-did the haymow in one of our barns and turned it into a meeting room. It was beautiful!”

For the ceremony, Chase’s hometown pastor performed the ceremony. The bride and groom chose not to do a first look, so the first time Chase saw Ashley was her walk down the aisle. “Chase was crying so hard he could barely catch his breath,” Ashley says. “He had the whole church in tears! That was probably my favorite part of the day.” Ashley also wrote the ceremony and made everyone laugh when she jumped the gun and said “I do” before her cue.

Hotel Marshfield not only served as a backdrop for the festivities, but also catered the wedding’s food and drinks. “The food was delicious! We did a plated meal with options of beef, pork, or chicken. Drinks were an open bar for wine and beer, and dessert was several flavors of cupcakes: white raspberry, chocolate peanut butter, pumpkin cream cheese, and Snickers Delight. The nacho bar and pizza were also a success for late-night snacks. Everything was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better day!”

To fill Hotel Marshfield with personal touches, Chase and Ashley tackled a number of DIY projects. “One of my friends and I made all of our table numbers and signage,” Ashley says. “Chase and I also made our own favors. We made homemade maple syrup and bottled it with little tags that said, ‘We hope this isn’t too sappy, but we’re so glad you’re here.’” The bride and groom also made four different kinds of wine and bottled them for their guests, complete with their picture on the label.
